EarthApps is a hackathon event focused on sustainability and environmental related issues. The hackathon is open to all high school and college students in St. Louis, Michigan and is run by Clean My Planet. The goal of the event is to inspire youth to think critically of environmental issues and work in teams to problem solve for potential solutions.
The planning team needed a strong brand presence that would be appealing to a younger audience and have an open inviting presence for a younger demographic. As the Visual Designer, I worked with the team to tackle this challenge. This project is still a work in process and will be updated regularly!
High school and college students are the targeted audience for the event. As such, we wanted to create a youthful look that would be inviting to a younger crowd. Based on our brainstorming activity, we discovered terms that we wanted to resonate with our branding. The main focus of the branding should be fun, inviting, and accessible. I worked on creating a moodboard and some style tiles that conveyed our branding adjectives along with an environmental theme.
After discussion with the team, we agreed to go with a more vibrant style guide that had a more bright and youthful look. We decided to combine aspects of both style tiles to create a new look.
With the established branding in hand, I moved on to focus on the logo. The logo I created is a blend of many environmental motifs. Since this sustainability challenge is not focused on a specific environmental issue, I wanted to create something that could convey several themes. The team liked the teardrop design more in the end and I opted for a non-stroke logo to bring more focus to the design.
As the timeline of the COVID-19 pandemic is still uncertain, the EarthApps team has collectively agreed to hold off any further planning until more information is known. As we learn more, the next steps would be to start working on a website as a resource point for information of the design challenge event.
